This movie portrays Sunil Thapa as a tough coach who gives rigorous training to Mary Kom and also a completely different perspective to his acting career . By his acting he has undoubtedly impressed Bollywood critics. Here are some opinions about him from some of the well known Bollywood critics:
“Full marks go to Sunil Thapa, who shows his emotional, professional and rational sides with equal ease. He is exactly what the highly ranked coaches are made up of. Same applies to the couple playing Mary’s parents. The rest of the cast help the film to move forward without any glitches or flaws.” – Taran Adarsh, Bollywoodhungama.com
“Sunil Thapa is marvellous as Mary Kom’s coach. He conveys his emotions of hope, despair, fear, frustration, anger at different times, all so wonderfully.” – Komal Nahta, Zee Etc
“Omung also wisely surrounds Priyanka with largely unknown actors who contribute immensely in creating a convincing texture. Darshan Kumar as Mary’s husband Onler, Robin Das as her father and Sunil Thapa as her coach are very good.” – Anupama Chopra, Hindustan Times
“Mary Kom has a brilliant supporting cast. From Mary’s parents, to the trainer (Sunil Thapa) to her husband (Darshan Kumaar) It needs to be said that Mary Kom is not a film about boxing, it is so much more.” - Sarita A Tanwar, DNA India
“Another known actor from Nepal, Sunil Thapa, who plays Priyanka’s coach in the film has done a good job.” – Saurabh Dwivedi, India Today
“The best part about the film is the casting. Priyanka Chopra has worked hard to get into the skin of the character and it shows. In fact it’s tough to imagine any other Bollywood actress to pull it off the way she has. Even her coach played by Sunil Thapa and her husband in the film, actor Darshan Kumar put in sincere efforts from their side.” – Rohit Khilnani, India Times
“Sunil Thapa who portrays Mary’s coach has got the right mix of aggression, domination and empathy.” – Prathamesh Jadhav, India.com
“The actors playing her parents, Rajni Basumatary and Bijou Thaangjam, are simply brilliant, and Darshan is extremely convincing as Mary’s anchor. Sunil Thapa astounding as her coach — here is an actor who speaks volumes with just his expressive eyes.” – R.M. Vijaykar, Indiawest.com
“Even though Priyanka dominates every scene in the film, her coach (Sunil Thapa), and husband — played by debutant actor Darshan Kumar — makes their presence felt with their honest performances.” – Rediff
